Dada Saheb Phalke Award

Dada Saheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award for films, named after Dada Saheb Phalke,who is known as the father of Indian cinema. Dadasaheb Phalke, born Dhundiraj Govind Phalke on April 30,1870, in Nashik(India).

He completed his schooling in Nashik and later pursued higher education at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay (Mumbai), where he studied painting and photography.

Phalke’s education in art and photography gave him a strong foundation in visual storytelling.Initially, he worked as a photographer and later ventured into the world of theater, where he gained valuable experience.

In 1913, Phalke made a significant leap by creating India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra.Over his career, he directed around 95 films and made significant contributions to the development of Indian cinema.

The award honors talent from various regional film industries in India, showcasing a rich diversity of languages and cultures.

The award was first given in 1969. The award is presented during the National Film Awards ceremony every year.
