ARMY DAY

Indian Army Day is observed annually on the 15th of January. This significant day commemorates the appointment of General KM Cariappa as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. General Cariappa, born on January 28, 1899 in Kodagu, Karnataka, had a father named Madappa who worked in the revenue department. During his service in Fatehgarh, a British officer’s wife bestowed upon him the nickname “Kipper,” which proved challenging for Field Marshal Cariappa to pronounce. Notably, in 1947, he became the first Indian to be chosen for a training course at the Imperial Defence College in Camberly, UK.
